Write One Page Per Day – 11/365 – January 11, 2018

Continued from January 10, 2018

I looked at the web browser on my computer in confusion. How did a note warning about cities more than a month away get in my backyard, and why did it want me to go to Montana? The questions plagued me the remainder of the day as I waited for my wife and kids to get home.

Anna and Lukas got off the bus around 3:30, ate a snack, did their homework, and proceeded to play around the house. When they asked where Brute was, I had told them Brute was visiting his friends in Tennessee. They seemed content enough by that answer. His grave on the other side of the property would have to wait until another day to tell them.

“How was your day, honey?” Elizabeth asked when she came through the door at five thirty. “How did it go with Brute?”

I shook my head as tears welled up in my eyes as Elizabeth wrapped her arms around me to comfort me. She had always been the stronger of us, and I lvoed her for it. I sat teh family down for a quick dinner before I got the kids ready for bed.

“I found this when I was digging on the other side of the property today.” I said as I handed Elizabeth the note once we were alone and relaxing in our bed.

“What’s this supposed to mean?” She asked after reading it quickly. “How did it get in the yard? Your family has owned this land for a very long time, and I know no one would bury anything like that in the yard.”

“I looked up the coordinates too. They are in Montana. A small town named Weeksville.” I said taking the note from her.

“Weeksville?” She repeated, “I’ve never heard of it.”

“It seems odd that it would be in the yard, but what’s weirder than that is that I think we should go check it out.” I said.

“It’s just a little note.” Elizabeth said, “Probably some kid playing a prank or something. Whoever wrote it probably thought it would be funny.”

“It was buried two feet in the ground in the exact spot I buried Brute, Elizabeth. Don’t you think it’s a little strange?” I asked. “I can’t see how it would hurt for us to take a trip up there. The kids have a vacation coming up in a couple weeks, and we can go up to Montana for it. I’ve never been there before.”

“So you want to take a vacation in Montana?” Elizabeth asked, “What’s in Montana anyway?”

“I don’t know actually. Let me look into vacations up there over the next week and see what I can find. Worse case scenario we can go see the redwoods instead. I know you’ve always wanted to see them.” I sugested.

“Alright, I’ve already put in the request for the vacation at work. As long as we’re together I think we will have fun.” Elizabeth said kissing me on the cheek. “Good Night, honey. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I said as I put the paper on the night stand and shut off the light.

I cuddled up to Elizabeth and held her close to me while she fell asleep. She was always fast to fall asleep, and normally I was as well, but tonight the note and the coincidence of where I had found it bothered me. I eventually fell asleep, but it was an uneasy night over all.
