“Okay.” Claire said, suddenly feeling guilty. “Sorry.”
“You don’t have to be sorry.” Beth replied, “You’re going through a lot right now. The world is in turmoil and you’re doing the best you can. Why don’t you come down and get something to eat and we can talk with the others about what we can do moving forward.”
Claire followed Beth out of the tiny apartment that they were in out into the hall. There were people all through the hall with every apartment door open. Beth led her into one that was three over from where she had been and found that the walls had been removed to provide a larger space for everyone to eat.
Daniel jumped up as soon as he saw her and rushed to her with a smile on his face.
“You’re awake!” He said. “I’m glad. I was starting to get worried when Gregory came back without you.”
“I’m fine. I just need to-” She paused.
“She needs to work through what she is going to do.” Beth interjected with a supportive smile. “She has a lot to think about.”
“When you’re ready, we’d like to bring you up to speed with everything that’s happened since you were shot.” Daniel said.
“We might as well get to it. Delaying everything isn’t going to help anything.” Claire replied as she walked over to a table and sat down.
Claire saw Daniel look to Beth uncertain about moving forward. Beth shrugged and joined Claire at the table.
“Alright. So, what we’ve figured out is that the enemy camp is located on the West End.” Daniel began, “They have set themselves up in the hospital there. We are still unsure who shot you, but we do know that they are more than likely going to try again. I know it’s not much, but this is what we’ve got.”
“Has anyone seen Goldman since the police station?” Claire asked.
“We haven’t looked for him specifically, but I can ask around.” Daniel said.
“I would still like the opportunity to talk to him.” Claire said, “I think that I will know what I have to do once I have.”
“Alright, I’ll get some people to look for him. You should stay inside. We don’t need you getting hurt again.”
“I think I’ll be fine.” Claire replied, “If you’re worried about my safety, we should probably go back to the station and get some vests. What do we have for weapons?”
“We have a few guns, but nothing really big. We’ve only just begun to gather resources.” Daniel said.
“You need to send some people to the police station and have them gather vests, weapons, and ammunition.” Claire said, “If you’re going to be guarding me, you need to be properly outfitted.”
“Understood.” Daniel said, suddenly standing at attention. It looked awkward.
“Make sure that whoever goes to the station is careful. It’s likely that the others will be seeking out weapons as well.” Claire said, suddenly feeling empowered.
