Claire’s phone began to vibrate in her pocket. She pulled it out and looked at the screen to see the picture of Goldman she had taken two years ago staring back at her.
“Hello?” She said as she answered the phone.
“Claire? Can you hear me?”
“Yes. What’s the status with the group over there?” She asked.
“They are crazies.” He replied. His voice sounded panicked to her, “When I showed up this guy appeared in a flash of light and spouted off about all this end of the world mumbo jumbo. I’m not sure these guys can be convinced of anything else.”
“What happened?” Claire said, “What did he look like?”
“He was this old guy. I don’t know, maybe fifty or sixty, but he was in great shape. He convinced everyone over here that they could have the whole planet for themselves if they just killed you. He knew your name and everything. He told them where you were! I think you need to get out of there.”
“Who’s on the phone?” Claire heard another voice ask.
“I’m checking my voicemails-” Claire heard before Goldman hung up the phone.
She pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at the screen for a few seconds. She felt a chill go up her spine. “We have to move.” She said looking back up at everyone.
“Why, what’s happened?” Daniel asked.
“It has given away our location and incited the other group to seek my blood. Goldman just called to give us a heads up. We need to leave.” She replied, the anger clear in her voice. “It clearly wants us to move forward with this mini war regardless of what we want.”
“Where are we going to go?” Justin asked.
“We can move over to the courthouse quick enough. It’s one of the more secure locations in the city. At least in there we can hold out until we can find a way of convincing the others that we can get everyone else back.” Claire replied.
“Once we figure out how to get the others back.” Daniel clarified.
“Let’s get going.” Beth said stepping forward. I’ll grab what I can for medical supplies and food. The rest of you grab anything that’s useful, including the weapons. If these guys can’t be convinced we may have to fight them.”
Everyone moved at once. Disappearing down the halls into the various apartments on the floor. Claire followed Beth and took everything she could carry in a large duffel. She quickly popped into the room she had first seen here and grabbed her holster, buckling it to her waist before returning to the hall. In only a few minutes, everyone had filled bags with various items and were ready to go.
“Let’s get going.” Justin said as he pushed through the door to the stairwell.
They exited the building and ran all at once across the street, through the parking lot, toward the courthouse that sat less than two blocks away.
