Claire and Justin made their rounds, using a first aid kit that Beth brought with her to patch up the people they had captured from the opposing group. When Claire got to the girl she had spoken with outside the girl swung at her wildly.

“You’re the only thing stopping me from getting what I want!” The girl screamed.

“Will you tell me your name?” Claire asked.

“Screw you! The creator told us that if you die then we would get to be in control of the world. I’m not telling you anything!” She yelled. The others in her group also began fighting the people who were tending to them. Claire noticed one teenage girl wasn’t fighting but instead was crying.

“What’s wrong?” Claire asked when she arrived at the side of the girl’s bed.

The girl turned over, facing away from Claire. She tucked her knees up into her chest and continued to sob.

“I know how you feel.” Claire said sitting down. “This is overwhelming to me as well. Is there something you need? Are you hungry or thirsty?”

“I don’t trust you.” The girl said through her arms.

“It’s fine if you don’t trust me, but I’m not going to hurt you.” Claire said.

“You shot at us, and now we’re prisoners. You already hurt all of us.”

“You were shooting at a group of unarmed people. I had to protect them. I told everyone that helped me not to kill anyone. I don’t want any of you to die, or be hurt.” Claire said as she produced her badge from inside her jacket. “I was a detective before all this started.”

“You were a detective?” The girl said turning to look at her.

“Yeah. It seems like a long time ago now, a lot has happened in the last few days. I don’t know if you met him, but Goldman was supposed to go to the hospital to talk with your group before you attacked us. He was my partner. He is trying to help everyone too. We want to bring all the people back that went away.”

“You’re trying to bring back your families?”

“Everyone’s families. Not just mine or Goldman’s, we don’t really have families, but we swore to protect everyone in this city, and now they are all held somewhere and we are trying to find them so we can get them home.” Claire said.

“What about the Creator?” The girl asked, wiping tears from her eyes, “What about the promises he made to us?”

“He told you that you could have control of the planet if you won, right?”

“Well, the truth of it is that I’m not stopping you from doing anything other than hurting the people I feel responsible for. If you all decided to go west and leave, or fly a plane to Europe, I wouldn’t have gotten involved. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have even known.” Claire said, “I’m not actually controlling anything. Not even the people here.”
