“I’m Amy.” The girl said as she died the tears off her face.
“I’m Claire. It’s nice to meet you.” She replied. “Are you feeling better now?”
“A little. If you’re not in control of anything, why did the Creator say that we had to kill you?” She asked.
“The ‘creator’ is upset because I refuse to go to war only because it said that it was unavoidable. I’ve decided that rather than go to war and reset everything the way that I was told it has happened many times before, I want to try to bring back everyone that was taken.” Claire replied.
“What about the other group?” Amy asked, “They want to have control of the world.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure that they won’t end up with it. I was shot the morning all this began.” Claire said as she lifted her shirt to show the scar. “The only reason I survived was the abilities given to my friends by their runes, which are now gone.”
“You still have a rune though.” Amy observed.
“That’s true. I’m not even sure why, but I do know that if I get shot again, I may not be able to survive it.”
“Wait. You ran to help those people we were shooting at, not even knowing that you would walk away from it? What if we had managed to hit you?” Amy asked.
“It’s a risk I had to take to protect people.” Claire said. “I’m going to leave you now. I have to talk with Daniel about getting the people back. You should rest.”
Amy nodded and stared at the ceiling deep in thought as Claire moved away from her to go find Daniel.
“Can we talk?” Claire said as she walked up to him talking to a few of the others.
“What are we doing with these people?” Daniel asked, “A lot of people are worried about having them here. They don’t think it’s safe for us.”
“It’ll be fine. At least one of them is reasonable enough to be talked with and I have faith that more will come around in time.” Claire replied. “They need our help and I don’t think it’s smarter to kick them out where they are injured-”
“And they could come back with more weapons.” Daniel added.
“Exactly, just give them some time to calm down and think things over. If they want to leave after the fact I’ll be okay with it, but for now I need you and your book.”
“Alright.” Daniel said reaching into the bag next to him and producing the book he had shown her earlier. “We are at your disposal.”
“Please don’t talk like that.” Claire said shaking her head, “Follow me please.”
She led him out of the courtroom and down the hall into a small conference room. They sat at one end of the table and opened the book to the first page.
“What are we looking for?” Daniel asked.
“A way back.” Claire replied.
