“Goldman?” Claire said taking a step back.
“I’m sorry, Claire.” He said before quickly repositioning the gun.
“No!” She screamed as the gun went off.
Claire expected to feel the pain of being shot once again, but instead saw Goldman fall to the floor. She lowered her hands and fire two quick shots at the men that had escorted her former partner into the room. Both shots hit their target and the men fell to the floor.
Claire rushed to Goldman’s side and, though he was still breathing, his breaths came in shudders. He was losing a lot of blood. She began to weep, putting pressure on the wound in his stomach. He winced
“It’s okay, Claire.” He sputtered.
“Don’t talk.” She said before screaming, “Somebody help me!”
“I have – to – tell you something.” He winced. “I love you, Claire.”
“Don’t you pull this shit on me!” Claire replied through her tears. “We’re partners, you can’t die on me!”
Goldman put his hand on top of hers and rubbed it gently for a moment before his body went limp and his head rolled to the side.
“No!” She screamed.
Justin came barreling through the door, he had his rifle trained to shoot, but his face went white when he saw Claire kneeling on the floor next to Goldman.
“Help me, Justin!” She pleaded.
He dropped his gun and got to the floor beside Goldman. “I don’t know if this will work.” He said as he placed his hand over Goldman’s rune and closed his eyes.
Claire waited, the agony of seeing Goldman die twisting her insides as though someone had them firmly in their fist. She did not let up the pressure, even with the tears flowing so quickly that she couldn’t see anymore. She wouldn’t give up on him.
“Come on, Ron! Don’t die. Come back to me! I need you!” She screamed. “I love you!”
Another few seconds passed and she felt a surge of heat course under her hands. Goldman’s body became pure light as she watched through teary eyes. She closed her eyes when it became too bright to see.
“I’m impressed.” A familiar voice said from behind her. “You finally admitted it to him and yourself.”
“Screw you!” Claire said without turning around. She knew it was the man claiming to be the creator. “This is your fault. I’ll destroy you for this.”
She felt a warm hand on the side of her face and when she opened her eyes she saw that Goldman was smiling up at her. She leaned over and hugged him. His arms wrapped around her and squeezed her. They stayed like that for a few moments before Justin let out a cough.
“Claire? Goldman?” I think you should see this.” He said walking past them.
Claire and Goldman released each other and looked to where Justin had moved. The bodies of the men Claire had shot looked like molten gold, but floated up and away like ash out the windows.
