“What do you think?” Cindy asked, holding the paper up for Jeff to see.
“I think the picture is better than I could’ve done,” he replied.
“You said that whoever broke into the office took the letter and script pages from your desk, right?” She asked.
“Do you have a safe place you can put these?” she said, picking up the playbill, article, and necklace.
“I have a safe,” he answered taking them from her outstretched hands, “I’ll put them there, that way no one will get to them.”
“Did you want to come out tonight?” she asked. “I know it’s only Tuesday, but I don’t think, under the circumstances, you should be alone.”
“I think I’m going to pass,” he said, “I don’t feel much like going out. I’ll have a bunch of work to catch up on tomorrow. So I should just get some rest.”
“Okay,” she replied, sounding slightly deflated, “I guess I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”
“I’ll be there,” he said, feeling a twinge of guilt, “maybe we can go out tomorrow night or something.”
“I’d like that,” she smiled.
Jeff walked her to the front door. When he opened the door, she didn’t immediately walk through it. Instead, she turned to him and kissed him on the cheek before running out of the house.
He shut the door, and walked down to his basement, where he kept his safe. The house was old, and the safe had been built into the foundation. He had bought the house for its age, but had never considered using the old safe before today.
He placed the playbill and the article in the safe, but hesitated when he moved to put the necklace down. The phone call went through his head, and he thought better of storing the necklace in the safe, preferring to put it around his neck.
He tucked the necklace under his shirt and secured the safe door before returning to his office.
When he looked at the clock and found that it was already five o’clock, he decided to get a jump-start on catching up for the next day, spending the next couple hours working before showering and going to bed, keeping the amulet on as he tucked into the covers.
