“You were trying to warn me,” Jeff said, looking down at the statue in his hands.
Laughter echoed through the cavern, sharp, wicked, and cold. Jeff looked up and spun around, searching for a way out.
“There has to be a way out of here,” Jeff muttered, “Where is the other door?”
Jeff moved along the wall, hoping that the other exit was simply hidden in the pattern of the stone. He could feel his blood pressure rising as his heart beat furiously inside his chest.
“Amulet bearer!” The cold, high-pitched voice called out from the darkness. “I’ve come for you! I told you that you couldn’t escape me!”
The statue was still pulsing wildly in his hands as panic surged through him. He couldn’t find the door, or there wasn’t another one to find. The memory of the last time they had left sudden refreshed in his mind, there was a circle that let them get up to the exit.
His heart fluttered in his chest at the hope that there would be another. He began kicking at the dirt, scuffing it as much as he could as he worked along the wall. He knew that the lines had been white from the other.
As the dark laughter moved closer with each passing second Jeff felt more of the hope leave him. He didn’t have any idea how the circle worked. Magic was beyond him.
“Magic!” He blurted, unable to keep his excitement at bay. He pulled the statue up so he could look at it, “Gabe had said that I held magic in me! She did something that lit up on my chest!”
Jeff looked at that wall of darkness creeping closer still, it was now more than three-quarters of the way across the cavern, wrapping its black tendrils through the air.
“I can sense your hope!” The voice called, “I assure you it’s misplaced. You will not get away this time!”
Jeff walked toward the entrance. The fear was still there, lingering in the back of his mind like a psychic leech. He wasn’t sure even how the magic would work. Gabe had never told him how to activate it, but he hoped that she would have made it so that he didn’t need to.
