Part 6 – The Change
While Jeff slept, dreams of Javia and Frakio filled his mind. He saw their entire lives, flooding in images that were too great in number to fully process. His head felt as though it would explode under the pressure.
When they ended, Jeff’s dreams went to darkness. Pitch Black, with high-pitched laughter. Slithering of unseen monsters, and then a flash of light and a warm voice comforting him.
Jeff awoke from his dream to see, Cindy staring down at him with her warm smile and eccentric dress. He grabbed her, pulling her close to him as his lips met hers. she melted into him, kissing him back and they remained there for a moment before stopping long enough for air.
“I see you’re okay,” Mario said from behind Cindy, “and you clearly know Cindy’s back.”
The realization of what he had just done penetrated the layers of fog from dreaming and embarrassment and shame washed over him.
“I’m so sorry, Cindy. I didn’t mean- I don’t-” Jeff started.
“Took you long enough!” Cindy said, cutting him off from his jumbled apology.
Jeff looked up at her confused for a moment, but overwhelmed that she was alright. He felt tears welling up in his eyes, blurring his vision, before he blinked and they traveled down to his ears.
“What happened?” Mario said, “Mildred hadn’t even gotten the runes ready before we all found ourselves outside.”
“Frakio came for me.” Jeff said, pushing himself to a seated position. “And Javia saved me.”
“I don’t know who they are, Jeff.” Mario said, “I think we need to talk a little more so you can fill me in.”
“Let him rest.” Cindy said, “I saw it all. I can explain it to you.”
Jeff closed his eyes while Cindy talked, her hand finding his. Her voice was like a warm blanket that he didn’t know he had needed for so long. He felt his heart swelling in his chest the longer her explanation went on. The skin on her hand felt soft and warm. He wanted nothing more than to grab her and kiss her again, but restrained himself.
