I heard a scream from above me as the wind whipped past me. I closed my eyes. I could feel the wind trying to push me up, but I wanted to feel weightless just a second longer. I didn’t realize how much I had missed it. The freedom and tranquility were unmatched in my mind.
As the darkness reached the building across the street I opened my eyes. The light I had hidden for so long flared to life. Burning out of my eyes as fiery wings erupted from my back and began beating against the fall. The heat destroyed my shirt, but I didn’t care.
“Hello, Brother…” I said as I landed gently on the sidewalk.
A dark figure, darker even than the black across the street formed from nothing and stepped forward.
“It’s time for us to go, War. Father is waiting for us.” he said.
“Don’t call me that,” I objected, “My name is Kevin.”
“We four brothers are not subject to human names,” he spat. “If so, what is my name?”
My eyes fell.
“Say it, brother. What is my name?” he repeated taking a step closer to me.
“Death.” I said as the darkness moved forward, passing by me as it continued on its journey, shrouding the pair of us in its cold embrace.
