NaNoWriMo Excerpt 11/29/18
From far off I heard what sounded like laughter and music, but it was so distant it could have been my imagination. A sudden jarring twitch sent my shoulder forward setting me off balance sending me falling toward the ground. I reached out my arms to catch myself as a wave of exhaustion swept over me.
My right hand landed on one of the mounds and sank to my elbow in the dirt. From within I heard screaming and crunching as a piece of wood stabbed me in the hand. Three pixies flitted out of the mound around my arm screaming and cursing.
All at once it was as if the forest exploded into life. From every tiny mound pixies swarmed out, carrying wooden weapons and wearing armor. My eyes searched for Coali, but she had vanished in an instant.
Good,I thought, if she makes it to the fruit, everything will be alright.
More than a dozen pixies swarmed around me as another wave of exhaustion swept over me, threatening to pull me under. I knew what it meant, I was waking up in the material realm. I fought to remain conscious as a pixie landed on the ground in front of my face brandishing a tiny spear.
“Why have you come to our village?” he demanded, prodding me in the nose with the tip of the spear. “Who are you? What do you want?”
“I am Sealbhach,” I said, stifling a yawn, “I’ve come to speak with Bayard.”
A murmur traveled through the pixies as the one before me stumbled backward away from me.
“The great unlucky one!” he piped.
“Please, get Bayard as quickly as you can. I don’t know how much longer I will be able to stay awake.” I pleaded. If I could get Bayard to come to me, it could afford Coali the opportunity to take the fruit away.
